Italy ➜ Calabria
Calabria is one of the two southern extensions of the Italian peninsula and at the same time an elongated peninsula between the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas, whose coastlines are strongly indented by larger and smaller inlets and are generally rocky and high on the Tyrrhenian side and low and sandy on the Ionian side. The capital of the region is Catanzaro, and the only regional border runs to the north with the Basilicata region and to the southwest separates “lo stretto di Messina” (ferry station and connecting hub between the two regions) from Sicily.
Calabria, the warm and enchanting land of the Riace bronzes. The colors of the sea, sandy beaches alternating with rocky coasts, small villages, wild nature, evidence of ancient origins and the intense flavors of local cuisine make Calabria a special destination at any time of the year.
The town of Tropea in the province of Vibo Valentia is famous for two things. Overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, on the western part of the Poro promontory and in the center of the Costa degli Dei, its historic center is located on a steep cliff about 60 meters above the sea. Here you will find the most beautiful beaches in Calabria, which are among the most sought-after in Italy. Tropea is also known for its red onions, the blue fish festival and the Nduja. We recommend a stroll through the historic center of Tropea, where you can lose yourself in the colors of the buildings, the souvenir stores and the restaurants where you can stop and taste the local delicacies.
There are three golf courses in Calabria. The 9-hole San Michele Golf Club, which also offers the possibility of booking at the Grand Hotel next to the golf club (also owned by the same company) overlooking the sea. The course is in good condition and is located in Cetraro in the province of Cosenza.
Porto di Gioia Tauro in the province of Reggio Calabria in front of the Stromboli volcano (Sicily) is home to the other 9-hole course in this region: the Tauriana Golf Club. It is a beautiful and technically perfect golf course with a breathtaking panorama. The clubhouse restaurant serves typical and very tasty cuisine, prepared by the always impeccable “owner” Demetra. A unique experience for those who want to experience “the true Italian way” and, above all, discover the cultural and maritime jewels of this welcoming region.
